Tony Coverdale will be giving a fascinating talk about the first 50 years development of the copper and brass mills in the Avon valley from 1690, starting from early experiments with the use of coal to smelt copper, and culminating in an integrated complex of manufacturing processes supplying an international trading market. The story starts with the experimental coal-fired smelting of Cornish copper ores on the banks of the Avon using Bristol coal and culminates with a sophisticated multi-site complex of mills and a trading system delivering products to Britain, Africa and North America.
The event will be held at the St. Stephen’s Centre (St. Stephen’s Church undercroft), Lansdown Road, Bath, BA1 5SX.
Doors open at 7:00m for serving wine and soft drinks and the finish time will be around 8:30pm. Tony will speak from 7:30pm. Tickets are £12.50, including a glass of wine are available in advance and on the door.
The event is being organised by the St Stephens Millennium Green Trust with all profits from the event going to the upkeep of the Green.
