The 2021 Lansdown Open Gardens

This year’s Lansdown Open Gardens event on August 22nd was a great success with a dry sunny day at long last. Five gardens and the Millennium Green all looking resplendent in perfect summer sunshine. Thank you to everyone for coming to support the event.

Over 325 visitors came and sales of entry, teas, plants and preserves, and raffle tickets raised over £3,000, which is essential in keeping the Green as a welcoming community space for everyone.

Below is a selection of photos from the open gardens and activities on the Millennium Green. (click on a photo to see full size and then scroll through photos).

We are very grateful to the five people who opened their gardens, to all the volunteers who manned the stalls, and to everyone who provided all those delicious cakes. Stan Scott has performed on the Green several times and we are grateful to him once again for providing excellent jazz for everyone to enjoy whilst relaxing with their tea and cake. John, our gardener, prepared the Green so that it was looking at its best, even though we were several months later with the event than we had originally anticipated.

The winning raffle ticket number was 535.

Path Renewal Underway

The first part of the program of path renewal on the Millennium Green is (almost) complete. The path leading up to the Green from Richmond Road is almost redone – just a small section leading up to the Allotments arch to complete. Many thanks to trustee Duncan Spooner and his team for all their hard work in breaking up the old path surface and laying down 10 tonnes of hoggin. No need for the gym when there is this job to be done.

Jeremy Seal Zoom Talk March 7th 2021

The Millennium Green’s first foray into virtual talks was very successful. Local author, travel writer and ‘Turkophile’ Jeremy Seal gave a fascinating talk on his latest book ‘A Coup in Turkey’. He drew very interesting parallels between events in Turkey during the 1950’s and early 1960’s and events in Turkey today.

We hope that later this year we will be able to hold more ‘Tea & Talk’ and ‘Tea & Wine’ events which will be ‘live’.

The Millennium Green Lottery Launched

The new St. Stephen’s Millennium Green Lottery has been launched. Participating in the Lottery is an additional way to support the Millennium Green.

A draw will be held every month with 50% of ticket sales revenue going towards the monthly prize and 50% going towards the upkeep of the Green. The goal is to have at least 100 monthly tickets sold at £2 per ticket which would give a monthly prize of £100. The more tickets sold the larger the monthly prize.

Lottery participants pay by annual standing order purchasing a minimum of one £2 monthly ticket at an annual cost of £24. More than one monthly ticket may purchased at an annual cost of £48 for two monthly tickets, £72 for three monthly tickets etc.

The first monthly draw will be held on 7th March 2021.

Mary Ede Retires As A Trustee

After over 20 years Mary Ede has decided to retire as a Trustee of the St. Stephens’s Millennium Green Trust.

Mary has been involved with the Millennium Green from its very early days and was one of the group of people who worked hard to preserve the Millennium Green and the St. Stephen’s Allotments from the hands of developers.

As well as serving as a Trustee for many years Mary has also supported many of the Millennium Green fund raising events. In particular Mary did much to support the Lansdown Open Gardens which has become a well-established annual event for the local community.

In the accompany picture Mary can be seen second from the left at the front alongside Ede family members on the occasion of the Ede family donation of the sundial to the Millennium Green.

Trustee Retirement

After many years as one of our Trustees Brenda Bridgeman is stepping down as a Trustee of the St. Stephen’s Millennium Green Trust at the end of August.

Brenda, together with her husband Ken, was one of the original driving forces behind the establishment of the St. Stephen’s Millennium Green twenty years ago.Over many years since Brenda has put in a tremendous amount of effort in ensuring that the Millennium Green developed and flourished to become the much loved community garden that the Green is today. She also spent much time working on the Green itself and has helped to organise many fund-raising events.

As a Trustee Brenda has always been a wise counsel to her fellow Trustees and has always provided very sound direction and advice when the Trustees have met.

The Trustees put on a (socially distanced!) ‘thank you’ event for Brenda on the Millennium Green. As you can see from the photo below we were blessed with a rainbow to mark the special occasion. Brenda can be seen with her dog celebrating.

20th Anniversary Virtual Celebration

June 25th this year marked the 20th anniversary of the Millennium Green Grand Opening. We had intended to mark this anniversary with a celebration during our events this year. As the Covid-19 pandemic has put paid to these plans we have produced a ‘Virtual Celebration’ instead. This takes the form of a short video that tells the story of the Green from the original concept and the building of the Green through to the wonderful community garden of today.

Watch the video here. It is best viewed full screen if possible. We hope that you enjoy the video.
