‘Talk with Wine’ April 28th 2023

The fundraising ‘Talk with Wine’ on April 28th was very successful with over 50 attendees and a total of over £560 raised towards the upkeep of the Millennium Green. Sarah Simmonds gave a fascinating talk about the very special features that qualify Stonehenge and Avebury for their place on the World Heritage List as well as the challenges of managing these complex cultural landscapes.

Our next fundraising event will be the Lansdown Open Gardens on Sunday June 11th. We hope to have six gardens open across Lansdown plus a Plant Sale and cakes and teas on the Millennium Green. Our intention is to hold another ‘Talk with Wine’ in the Autumn.

Renewal Work On Paths Complete

The ongoing project to renew the paths on the Millennium Green is now complete. Many thanks to Duncan Spooner and his team for their hard work on a wet Friday to get the job completed. This means that the Green is ready for a good number of visitors during Spring and Summer

This means that two planned projects on the Millennium Green are now complete. The replacement of the rotten decking by the pond as well as the path renewal. The next project is the installation of a new 1000 litre rainwater tank which will enable much more use of rainwater for watering on the Millennium Green. The new tank has been delivered and is in place awaiting connection to the gutters. The other project planned for the Spring is to put new playbark down around the fort and the pig.

We are grateful for a legacy and for all the financial support that we get from our supporters to help fund these projects.

‘Carols on the Green’ December 7th 2022

The ‘Carols on the Green’ on December 7th was a great success. The weather was perfect for the event with a clear sky and an almost full moon giving a wonderful frosty and crisp seasonal atmosphere.

Over 80 people attended, and the CitySound Voices Bath Choir gave a rousing rendition of favourite carols.

Sales of mulled wine, mince pies, cake, biscuits and seasonal produced went very well. The frosty evening certainly encouraged the sales of mulled wine. Overall the evening made a profit which will go towards the upkeep of the Millennium Green.

Many thanks to the CitySound Voices Bath choir for their excellent singing. Many thanks to Trustees Chris Melbourne, Peter Akbar and Anne Love for organising the event and thanks to all the other helpers. It is our intention to make this an annual Christmas event.

See below for a gallery of photos from the evening.

‘Talk with Wine’ October 6th 2022

The ‘Talk with Wine’ on October 6th was very successful. There were over 70 attendees to hear Sally Helvey give a fascinating talk on the history of the Cleveland Pools and the story of the 18-year long project to restore the Pools back to becoming a wonderful asset to the community.

The talk was very timely as the Pools have just reopened together with an excellent piece on the BBC One Show featuring the Pools.

Watch out for our next ‘Talk with Wine’ event in early Spring 2023.

‘Talk with Wine’ April 27th 2022

The ‘Talk with Wine’ on April 27th was a great success with over 70 attendees and over £650 raised towards the upkeep of the Millennium Green. Professor Barry Gilbertson’s talk on ‘World Heritage: it’s importance to Bath and our local economy’ was very well received. Barry gave fascinating insights into the benefits and challenges to Bath of being a World Heritage City. Barry also spoke about the Bath Blitz given that April 27th was the 80th anniversary of the Blitz.

Many thanks to Anne Love, to her husband Charlie, to Chris Melbourne and to other helpers for making the events a success. Thanks also to the Royal High School for providing a great venue, the Sophie Cameron Centre.

Jackie Harris Retires As A Trustee

After 20 years of sterling service to the St. Stephen’s Millennium Green Trust Jackie Harris has decided to retire as a Trustee.

The Trustees would like to thank Jackie for her tireless support of the Millennium Green over many years and for her great work in organising many fund-raising events over two decades. Indeed Jackie played a major role in the great success of the Lansdown Open Gardens just last weekend. The financial health of the Trust owes a great deal to Jackie’s fund-raising efforts.

Jackie also spent much time helping with plantings and gardening on the Green. The current magnificent state of the Green is in a significant part down to her dedication and efforts over the past years.

The Trustees would also like to thank Jackie’s husband Richard for all the effort he has put into fund-raising events over the past years.
